Bull Calf was purchased by the President & Council of the Royal Academy under the
terms of the Chantrey bequest
Now in the collection of the Tate Gallery (catalogue no. NO5443) and presently on long
loan to The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, Co. Durham DL12 8NP
Reference: Daily Herald 1/5/1943 "... he persuaded the London County Council to give him the large piece
of a pillar blown off a bombed bank in Fulham ... he finished in time to win the first prize at the last Christmas
exhibition at the Kennington Polytechnic (where he was a student) ... last week David's bull calf was accepted
for the Royal Academy summer show - it was the first piece he had sent to the Academy"
