A ‘pas’ is a step in ballet. ‘Pas de bas’ means step of the Basques, or ‘Pas de basques’ as the Scots prefer, and derives from national dances performed by the Basque people. It is halfway between a step and a leap, taken on the floor (glissé) or with a jump (sauté); it can be done moving toward the front or toward the back
